Since 1972, World Environment Day has become a worldwide movement to increase human awareness and action on environmental protection. Every year, millions of people from more than 143 countries participate in the event, creating a positive change in international environmental policy as well as the behavior of the people on environmental protection.
World Environment Day in 2018 was organized by the United Nations with the theme “Resolving plastic and plastic pollution” in order to propagandize, mobilize and urge people to change their daily life habits in order to reduce the burden. In Vietnam, according to the statistics, each household uses about 1kg of bags a month in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City on average 80 tons of plastic and plastic waste per day. With its sustainability in nature, plastic waste and plastic bags are potentially high risk of environmental pollution, becoming a huge challenge for the community and society.
On April 11, 2013, the Prime Minister promulgated Decision No. 582 approving the scheme on enhancing the control of environmental pollution caused by biodegradable plastic bags in daily life up to 2020.
